Extraction is the highest-value hour of the whole job, and it is almost entirely about arithmetic. Removing water mechanically is roughly two orders of magnitude faster than evaporating it. Every gallon pumped off the floor in the first hour is a gallon that does not have to be pulled out of the air by a dehumidifier over the following three days — which is why a fast extraction shortens the drying phase and reduces what has to be replaced.

The equipment matters less than where it goes. Truck-mounted units handle volume; submersibles handle depth; weighted extraction tools pull water out of carpet and pad by compressing it rather than skimming the surface. The judgement is in finding the water that is not obvious: under the tile bed, in the wall base behind the skirting, in the void beneath a raised floor.

This is also the point where a thermal camera earns its place. It does not see moisture — it sees temperature difference, and evaporating water cools a surface. Used properly it tells us where to take a meter reading, and the meter tells us what is actually wet. Used badly it produces a colourful picture and a wrong conclusion, so every cool area gets confirmed with a probe before anyone opens a wall.

Extraction is normally the start of a drying job rather than a service on its own. If you only need the water gone — a small overflow on a tiled floor with no wicking and nothing porous affected — say so and we will tell you honestly whether drying equipment is needed at all.
