A sewage backup is a health hazard first and a water loss second. IICRC S500 classifies it as Category 3 — grossly contaminated — which carries bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Nothing about the response is improvised, and none of it should be done in shorts and trainers with a mop.

The order is containment, removal, cleaning, then drying. Containment comes first because the fastest way to turn a bathroom problem into a whole-house problem is to walk contaminated water down the hallway on your boots, or to run an air mover across it and aerosolise what is in it.
