Almost every fire is also a water loss. A residential fire attack can put a great deal of water into a building in a short time, and that water is still there when the engines leave. So the first hours of fire restoration look like water restoration: extract, and get air moving, or the fire damage on the ground floor is joined by mould in the ceiling below it.

Before that, the building has to be made secure. Emergency board-up and tarping over openings is not a formality — an open structure invites weather and theft, and an insurer will ask what was done to prevent further loss. We board up, tarp what is exposed, and document the condition as we found it.

Then soot, which is chemistry rather than dirt. What burned determines how it behaves: protein residue from a kitchen fire is a thin, foul-smelling film that spreads through a whole house; synthetic materials leave a smeary black soot that sets into finishes if wiped wrong; natural timber leaves a drier, more powdery residue. Each responds to different cleaning agents, and using the wrong one drives the residue into the surface permanently.

We work to IICRC S700 for fire and smoke. Where the structure needs rebuilding, the same licensed crew does it, so the cleaning scope and the reconstruction scope are written by one company and you get one invoice for the job rather than a handoff halfway through.

Questions

Fire Damage Restoration — the two things people ask first.

Why does fire damage need water extraction?

Because the fire service uses water to put the fire out, and a great deal of it stays in the building. Left alone it soaks into structure and ceilings below the fire floor, and you end up with a mould problem on top of the fire damage.

Can smoke-damaged contents be saved?

Many can, depending on the residue and the material. Hard non-porous items usually clean up well. Soft furnishings and anything with protein residue are harder and sometimes not economic to save. We assess item by item rather than declaring everything a total loss.
